The program is currently in the first phase of a ten-year plan that reflects the organisations’ joint aim to radically shift the understanding and implementation of accessibility in the arts, and to move the sector-wide conversation beyond access services and into cultural equity. It is a program designed to benefit Deaf and Disabled artists, arts-workers, and audiences by increasing access and improving social inclusion and mental health outcomes in the arts sector for people who are Deaf or Disabled. One part of the Radical Access program is to centre work by Deaf and Disabled artists as the best work in the Festival, and we do this by providing funding and support for artists to excel. Chunky Move have come on board as co-commissioning partners to help make this part of the Radical Access program happen, and that’s where this opportunity comes in!THE DETAILSThis is a partnered commission.?That means Chunky Move and Melbourne?Fringe are working together to commission and support the artist who receives this opportunity. You can find out more about Chunky Move at?www.chunkymove.com?and more about Melbourne Fringe at?www.melbournefringe.com.au. The commission is for an artist working with dance or movement.?Chunky Move champions art form experimentation and the company is passionate about seeking out new forms of dance performance that explore interesting relationships between materials, bodies and spaces. You might like to check out the variety of works Chunky Move has produced in the last few years to gain a better understanding of the kind of work they present – see the Major Works page at www.chunkymove.com/works and the?Activators page: www.chunkymove.com/programs/activators/. Your idea does not have to replicate any of these examples, but we're keen to support an artist who may have a genuine interest in the kind of work we make so there's a good foundation for the partnership. We don’t stipulate the kind of project you should make, however one of the main considerations will be its practical suitability for being developed and presented in the Chunky Move studio space, which can convert to a black box theatre. It is important to be both imaginative and practical in your project pitch, so try to balance both. This opportunity is for an experienced artist.?We welcome you to define whether you are emerging or experienced – how we look at it is: if you're confident in the?art you create, have a few works under your belt, and have the proven ability to pull together a team to help make your work a success, then?you are an experienced artist!Applications are only open to a lead artist who is Deaf or Disabled.?Amplifying the art of Deaf and Disabled artists is a core aim of the Radical Access program. This commission is for an artist who has lived experience of Deafness or Disability (which may include visible and invisible disability, chronic illness, mental illness, neurodiversity, and any other barriers or identifiers experienced by people in disability communities).Chunky Move and Melbourne Fringe?are here to assist. Our core staff will be available to?consult and guide your team through the development, promotion and presentation of your work. Chunky Move will lead producing and production management of the work, including developing and managing the project budget (in close consultation with you). What sort of project costs will the $40,000 commissioning fee cover? The commissioning fee needs to cover all artist fees and on-costs. This includes your own as well as any team members (for example, a stage manager, designer, or lighting/sound operator). The fee also covers production expenses, such as set and costume costs or equipment hire. It will also cover administration costs, such as public liability insurance and music licensing. Some crew, front of house or other staffing may also need to be covered. This will depend on the needs of the production, the front of house requirements and any embedded accessibility elements. Chunky Move and Melbourne Fringe may be able to assist with these costs or provide staffing in-kind. We will work with the selected artist to calculate these costs based on their project idea and help you balance a detailed budget. On top of your commissioning fee we will also provide additional support. This includes seven weeks in-kind studio space for the development and presentation of your work. It also includes a $3,000 contribution towards your access costs and up to $2,500 towards access service costs for your audience. We will also cover the costs of your artistic mentorship and provide you with consultation and guidance from Chunky Move and Melbourne Fringe staff.THE APPLICATION PROCESSThe Radical Access Commission is a two-stage application process. This first stage is open?until 22 January 2023?and?asks you questions about your past work, your idea for a commission, and ideas of the team you would like to?engage. It is a relatively easy process where we want to open the door and ask you to let us know what you would like to do.Up to three applicants will then be invited to proceed to the second round, where we will ask you to provide additional information, such as more detail around your idea, the sort of production requirements it might have, and confirmation of the team?who will be helping you deliver this work. We will also be asking you to attend an interview (online or in-person) to discuss your project in more detail with the?selection panel. A one-off fee of $500 will be provided as payment for the more detailed work we require of artists proceeding to the second round. To start your application and look at the questions, please click here to go to the EOI Form.Video or Audio ApplicationsWe expect most applications to be submitted in writing using this EOI form, however we are also accepting applications submitted as a video or audio file. If your video is in?another language, such as Auslan,?you are welcome to suggest a preferred interpreter for us to engage. Please note, this is option to submit by video or audio is not about creating something with high production values, it is an option provided for access purposes.
